Course Overview: The Purpose Driven Innovation course delves into the convergence of personal motivation, societal needs, and sustainable business practices. Covering a range of topics from personal impact to sustainable business models, the course equips us with the knowledge and skills to create meaningful and impactful innovations. Here's an in-depth summary of the course content, my contributions, and how we applied these concepts in our startup, Get a Grip.

02

Personal Exploration and Self-Awareness: The journey begins with a deep dive into self-exploration. We are encouraged to reflect on our personal goals, values, and motivations. Techniques such as journaling, meditation, and cognitive-behavioral methods are employed to enhance self-awareness, self-efficacy, self-regulation, and self-reflection. Assignments in this segment include assessing personal impact on others and understanding one's ecological footprint. These activities lay the foundation for personal growth and prepare us to tackle broader societal challenges.

03

Stakeholders and Value Creation: A crucial part of the course involves understanding and analyzing stakeholders. We learn to identify various stakeholder groups and assess their needs and impacts. This analysis is vital for developing value propositions that address specific problems or needs. The course emphasizes the Triple Bottom Line approach, which balances People, Planet, and Profit. By focusing on these three pillars, we learn to create comprehensive and sustainable value propositions.

04

Ethics in Innovation: Ethical considerations are integral to the innovation process. The course covers various ethical theories and frameworks, such as consequentialism, deontology, and virtue ethics. We apply these frameworks to our decision-making processes, ensuring that our innovations are not only effective but also ethically sound. Discussions and assignments explore moral dilemmas and the importance of ethical behavior in business, highlighting the need for integrity in every step of the innovation process.

05

Sustainability and Circular Economy: Sustainable business models form a core component of the curriculum. We explore different models, including platform, community-based, and circular business models, and learn how these can create multiple forms of value. Practical examples, such as Fairphone, Mr. Green Africa, and SUNT: The Banana Factory, illustrate how sustainable practices are implemented in real-world scenarios. This section underscores the importance of integrating sustainability into business strategies.

06

Market Research and Stakeholder Analysis: To inform our innovation strategies, we engage in comprehensive market research and stakeholder analysis. This involves gathering and analyzing data to better understand market needs and stakeholder impacts. Assignments include creating Business Model Canvases (BMCs) for companies with a sustainability focus and developing key performance indicators (KPIs) for various forms of capital. These exercises enhance our analytical skills and prepare us for real-world challenges.

Purpose Driven Innovation and Impact Measurement: The course emphasizes the creation of purpose-driven innovations that connect to real stakeholders and demonstrate tangible impacts. We are introduced to the Integrated Reporting Framework, which helps us understand how to communicate value creation across financial, manufactured, intellectual, human, social, and natural capitals. By measuring and reporting on the impact of our innovations, we learn to validate and refine our approaches, ensuring that our efforts lead to meaningful and sustainable change.

08

Get a Grip Project: Our startup project, Get a Grip, focused on addressing the challenges students face in managing their longlines—extensive lists of assignments, deadlines, and study tasks. Longlines can often become overwhelming, leading to stress and decreased productivity among students. We aimed to develop innovative tools and strategies to help students streamline their workflow, prioritize tasks, and maintain a balanced academic life.

Get a Grip is a vibrant community dedicated to helping people break free from digital isolation and reconnect with themselves, others, and nature. Our mission is to combat digital fatigue by fostering real-world connections and promoting holistic well-being. Our vision encompasses escaping digital fatigue, building meaningful connections, and engaging in activities that refresh the mind, body, and spirit.

We adopted a hybrid business model combining platform, community, and circular approaches. Our offerings include free basic memberships with access to challenges, forums, and resources, as well as premium memberships with personalized coaching and exclusive content. We also partner with local businesses, eco-friendly brands, and community organizations to drive engagement and promote well-being.

Key initiatives include nature retreats, social circles, wellness workshops, purposeful pursuits, outdoor adventures, and mindfulness moments. These activities are designed to address loneliness and enhance overall health and well-being.

Specifically, I recorded and edited two of the videos that were crucial for our project's presentation and stakeholder engagement. This experience not only enhanced my technical skills but also allowed me to contribute to the team's efforts in a tangible way, showcasing the impact of our innovations.

09

Challenges in Understanding Dutch Material: Some course materials were in Dutch, which posed a challenge due to my A2 level proficiency in the language. This limited my ability to fully grasp certain nuances and detailed content, making it harder to understand and interpret some of the concepts and instructions. However, this experience also highlighted the importance of effective communication and adaptability in overcoming language barriers.
